A defense minister has stated that the MoD is currently examining the possible threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret information in any cars.
Safety Guidance for MoD Staff
During a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister said that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that safety is a concern in every contemporary vehicles.
Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any car, due to the growing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to only have those secret talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Wider Security Context
The revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been directing lasers at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
This wider defence situation underscores the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of official operations, including transport use to communication practices.
