Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
