The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not just his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
